Class Descriptions

(All lessons are 30 minutes) - If you don't see a class you want listed then let us know and we can add classes with at least 3 students interested.

TOTS: For 3 and 4 year olds to learn to skate without falling. This Snowplow Sam program consists of 3 levels. All 3 levels must be passed before going on to Badge 1 or Hockey 1.

Badges 1 - 8: Students should enroll in badge classes according to the tests passed last year. For example, if a student passed the test for Badge 3, he/she should enroll in Badge 4.

Badge 1: For the absolute beginner to learn to skate without falling. 2 foot forward movements; getting up without falling; snowplow stops.

Badge 2: Forward skating on one foot; backward skating on two feet; turning from forward to backward on two feet.

Badge 3: Stroking forward; beginning edges (forward and backward); turning from forward to backward on a circle; 2 foot spin.

Badge 4: Forward edges and crossovers; backward stroking; snowplow stop; 3 turn.

Badge 5: Backward edges and crossovers; hockey stop; one foot spin.

Badge 6: Inside 3 turn; T-stop; combination movements; forward spiral.

Badge 7: Mohawks; scratch spin; ballet jump.

Badge 8: Outside 3 turns; waltz jump; pivots; combination steps; mazurka.

Hockey 1: Basic skating techniques for beginning hockey players. All 3 levels of Tots/Snowplow Sam must be passed before taking this class.

Hockey 2: For those students who have completed Hockey 1 or Badge 1 & 2. Emphasis is on backward skating.

Dance 1: Badge 8 must be passed before taking this class. Forward outside swing rolls to a count of six; alternating forward progressives in sequence to a count of six; Killian hold; corner steps on Dutch Waltz; skate Dutch Waltz pattern with music. Offered on Saturday Dance session.

Program Classes: For those who have passed Badges 4 - 7. Each group will be made up of students at their current Badge level. For example, Program 5 will be made up of students who are working on Badge 5 (passed Badge 4). Classes will not be for learning skills to achieve the next Badge, but for refining/perfecting skills already acquired as students learn programs/routines. These programs will be suitable for entry into Basic Skills competitions. Students may work on their current badge level by signing up for the traditional Badge group at their level.

Freestyle 1: For those that have completed Badge 8 or equivalent. An introduction to freestyle, including the waltz jump, salchow, toe loop, half flip, two-foot spin and back spin.

Bridge to Excellence Program: For Badge 6, 7, 8 or Free Style levels to transition to the more advanced figure skating sessions. 10 week program starts in October with 1 hour per week on ice and additional off ice sessions. At completion may upgrade to Comprehensive membership for the partial season.

Young Adult 1 (age 11 and up): Basic skating techniques for beginners or those who have not skated recently. Edges (forward and backward) and simple turns.

Young Adult 2 (age 11 and up): More advanced skating techniques to learn dance moves and basic freestyle elements designed for young adults.

Adult 1: Basic skating techniques for beginners or those who have not skated recently. Edges (forward and backward) and simple turns.

Adult 2: Beginning dance moves and basic freestyle elements designed for adults.

Beginner Moves in the Field: For those that have completed Badge 6 or equivalent. An introduction to Moves in the Field. Thursday evenings time TBD and signing up includes skating on the Thursday evening Comprehensive session.

Intro to Skating: Friday evenings. For those that have skated before and want to brush off their skills and/or learn new skills.
